Nene Park Academy, located in Peterborough, approached us for a full refurbishment of their gym. Their existing facility was no longer fit for purpose as it was over ten years old, and it was overcrowded. The outdated selectorised equipment limited their functionality, and the space was not fully optimised for the students’ training needs. They needed a modern, practical gym that would support physical education lessons and athletic development.
A collaborative design process
We worked closely with Aaron Kennedy, the PE Curriculum Area Leader, to create a design that would meet the school’s requirement. To help them visualise the transformation, we provided 3D renders which offers a clear picture of the new layout and equipment selection. Investing in a new gym is a significant decision, and our experience ensures that every choice is made with purpose, and the 3D renders help to refine and finalise the design.

A seamless installation
Timing was key to ensure a smooth transition. We coordinated the removal of the existing equipment and scheduled the installation during half-term to avoid disrupting students and staff.
As gyms, especially in a school, are high-traffic training spaces, choosing the correct flooring was a priority. We installed 30mm rubber flooring throughout, this provides a durable and impact-resistant surface. In addition, we also installed our custom APEX numbered turf, which features clear markings, something which is a great asset to help with school lessons and functional training.

The new facility was equipped with a range of high-quality training tools, including two Half Human treadmills, a Wattbike, a Concept2 RowErg, a SkiErg, and a Tornado Bike. The strength area was designed to support students of all ability levels, featuring KingsBox Half Racks, APEX rubber competition plates, and technique bars and plates to aid in the development of younger athletes.
Our modular storage rack was also installed, neatly organising dumbbells, kettlebells, and slam balls to keep the space efficient and accessible.
Reflecting the school pride
To take the transformation to the next level, we incorporated custom branding throughout the space. Adding the school badge to plyo box sets and custom sweat wrap for the adjustable benches helps bring the school’s identity into the gym, reinforcing a sense of pride and motivation for students as they train.

Going Beyond the installation
As part of the project, Nene Park Academy will also benefit from our partnership with Ed Archer, who will lead an inductor workshop on how to maximise the new facility. The hands-on session will provide staff with the confidence and knowledge to deliver impactful and engaging physical education lessons.
Offering workshops like this is a key part of our approach, ensuring schools can make the most of their investment and provide students with a safe, effective and inspiring training environment.

A space designed for the future
The transformation of Nene Park Academy’s gym has created a modern, functional and inspiring space for students to train. By combining high-quality equipment, smart design, and professional education support, the new facility is set to enhance PE lessons and athletic development for years to come.
Absolute Performance have done a great job for us, and the WOW factor has certainly been evident when students and staff have walked into the new space. Our equipment is not state of the art and will allow our GCSE and A-Level students to really be put through their paces in the fitness and physiology sections of the course.
